In a 14th District heated rivalry the Greenwood Lady Gators hosted the Bowling Green Lady Purples as the first part of boy/girl double header at Greenwood High School Friday night.
The Lady Gators jumped out to an early lead with the help of Lauren Lamb as she hit two of her four three pointers on the night within the first minutes of the quarter and put Greenwood up 8-0. Bowling Green then held them to just four more points and ended the first quarter down 12-9.
The second quarter also belonged to the Lady Gators outscoring their opponent 11-6. Greenwood's Amanda Walden converted on a three point play with only seconds left putting her team up 23-15 and keeping the momentum on the Gators' side going into halftime.
The second half was a completely different story as the Lady Purples came out with new energy and intensity. Bowling Green head coach LaVonda Johnson said "I'm trying to challenge these girls to be the aggressors not only for the second half but for all four quarters. We came out with no emotion in the first half."
Bowling Green took their first lead of the game with 2:36 left in the third quarter putting the score at 27-26. The Lady Purples had a huge third quarter scoring 21 points to give them a one point lead going into the fourth quarter with a score of 36-35.
Greenwood started the fourth quarter much like the first going on a 7-0 run. Bowling Green's Shelby Lawson tied the game at 47-47 with a three pointer, but Walden would score on the other end for Greenwood on their next trip down giving the Lady Gators a 49-47 lead with only a minute remaining.
With 41 seconds left in regulation Bowling Green's Chelsea Martin would tie the game at 49-49 and send the game into overtime. Bowling Green scored immediately after the tip-off and didn't look back.
Greenwood's only point during overtime was a free throw by Walden with 53 seconds left which would give her a team high 17 points on the night. Bowling Green's Erica Smith hit six free throws with under a minute left to seal the win for the Lady Purples with a final score of 59-52. Smith led Bowling Green finishing with 25 points and 7 rebounds and Lamb finished with 16 points for Greenwood.
The win put Bowling Green at 9-8 overall and 2-0 in the district, and the Lady Gators fell to 10-7 overall and received their third district loss.
