What was supposed to be a highly competetive fourth region battle turned out to be a very lopsided victory for the Franklin-Simpson Lady Wildcats.
On homecoming night at Franklin-Simpson High School, following a victory from the boys team, the Lady Cats hosted the Cumberland County Lady Panthers with both teams looking for their twenty-second victory of the season.
The Lady Panthers were without their top scorer, Kristen Rowe, who had suffered an injury that could keep her out for the rest of the season. The Lady Cats took advantage jumping out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Drea Gooch ended the first quarter for Franklin-Simpson with a three pointer right before the buzzer giving them a 24-7 lead. The Lady Cats never let up and ended the half ahead 31 points with a score of 53-22.
Cumberland County's Kendra McIntyre and Laura Fletcher both had excellent games scoring 15 and 21 points each as they tried to make up the difference, but Franklin-Simpson would prove to be too much. At the end of the third quarter they remained up 64-35. The Lady Cats led the entire game and cruised to an 82-50 victory over one of the region's better teams.
Head coach Lex Lindsey said, "District is the last week of February and Region is the first week of March. You want to be playing your best basketball at that time, and I like where my team is right now. I tell my girls 'Just play your best; if you play your best good things are going to happen.'"
Good things continue to happen for the Lady Cats as they improved to 22-2 overall and remain the only undefeated team in the region with a 14-0 record. Britney Payne paced the Lady Cats with 21 points and Chastity Gooch contributed 15 of her own.
The loss put the Lady Panthers at 21-4 overall and gave them their second loss in the region. They will host Barren County on the 15th and Franklin-Simpson will host Muhlenberg North on the 12th.
