High School Football Mid-Season Report

It's hard to believe the high school season is about half way over

Tonight marks the sixth week of high school football and it's hard to believe. This season has gone by fast! Since we are essentially at the half-point, I thought I'd share my thoughts on what we've seen so far. I'm not going to break down every team, but I will place teams into tiers.

Tier I

Bowling Green (5-0) - The Purples have been ranked number one all year in class 5-A and they have shown why. They are 5-0 which includes an impressive win at St. X and are winning their games by almost 37 points. Scooter Hollis and company have really looked good all year.

Chance to go to state: 8.5 (they 'll have a tough road to get there)

Warren Central (5-0) - Some people may have thought the Dragons would take a step back since they lost so much from last year's team but they are undefeated, and beating teams by about 32 points a game. The potential undefeated match-up against Bowling Green in a few weeks could be one of the biggest regular season games in this area in quite some time

Chance to go to state: 7.5 (again, a very tough road to get there)

Glasgow (5-0) - The Scotties loss in the playoffs last season came as a surprise to many as they were leading late in the game but this year they have shown no sort of hangover. They are undefeated have looked great all year. They are winning games by an average of 35.  Parker Cash, Jalen Sublett and Hunter Bowles have the offense rolling.

Chance to go to state: 9 (the offense will be hard to stop)

Tier II

Franklin-Simpson (4-1) - They lost to Central big, but who hasn't? Other than that, they are undefeated and the offense has really picked up the last two weeks, scoring 56 and 61 points. They have two dynamic players in the Wickware cousins and if you don't count the Central game, the defense is only giving up 12 points a game.

Chance to go to state: 6.5 (just don't know if they have the IT factor to get there)

Green County (4-1) - They lost their opener but since they haven't lost and the offense is putting up 30 points in those games. I haven't seen them play this season, but it will be interesting to hear how they play against Danville tonight.

Chance to go to state: 5 (merely because they would most likely have to beat Glasgow)

Edmonson County (5-0) - The Wildcats are 5-0, but the competition hasn't been all that tough. That being said they are still scoring 49 points a game. 49. 49. I just wanted that to sink in. They are currently ranked 7th in the state, and looking at the schedule it's not crazy to think they could run the table.

Chance to go to state: 5.5 (they have an easy schedule which I think will be their downfall)

Tier III

Allen County-Scottsville (2-3) - Yes they have a losing record but they have played a schedule worth and A+ rating. They lost to Bowling Green (tier I team), Glasgow (tier I team) and Boyle County (defending Class 4A state champs). In their two wins they have only given up seven points. Keep in mind they lost a lot of seniors from last year's state runner up team.

Chance to make state: 2 (I don't see a return trip to Houchens-Smith Stadium)

Butler County (5-0) - Tough game tonight against Owensboro Catholic, but undefeated to this point and they even won a game 74-0. That's just impressive. They've also showed they can win close games.

Chance to go to state: 3 (don't see it happening this year)

Ohio County (5-0) - There are a lot of undefeated teams in the area this year and Ohio County is among them. They are quietly averaging 47 points a game. They can score and next week against Christian County will be a big time game.

Chance to go to state: 3 (they'd most likely have to beat BG, not happening)
