A couple quick thoughts I had from last night's game:
-Coach Willie Taggart talked a lot about the size of his players, and the team was bigger, faster and looked like a D-1 team. One guy he talked about specifically, was Andrew Jackson. Boy was coach right. Jackson had 12 tackles and one sack against the Wildcats. The best part was during the broadcast when they caught Jackson saying, "I thought these guys were supposed to be SEC?"
-Along the same lines of Jackson's play, the whole defense played great. They flew around, made plays and even had three picks. Who knows if it's the size of the guys, their dedication in the off-season to the weight room, or new coordinator Lance Guidry. I'm guessing it's a good combination of all three. If the defense plays like that the rest of the year, they should have no problem stopping opponents in Sun Belt play.
-As good as the defense was, the offense struggled mightily. Kawaun Jakes looked uncomfortable most of the night. Bobby Rainey ended up getting 100 yards, but it was a battle to get things going. There were a couple of times the offense moved the ball, but could never punch it in. Once the offense gets used to the new playbook under coordinator Zach Azzanni, they should be fine.
-On my twitter (shameless plug beware) @andrewjdawson, I said I thought the Tops could win six games, and I'm still sticking to that. If they pull off the upset against Navy, I think they'll win seven. Time will tell, the season is young.
