So it goes without saying, it hasn't been a great start for either WKU basketball team, men's or women's.
For the men, tonight starts a brand new season. The out of conference schedule was ugly, and that's putting it lightly. Although if you want to count moral victories, the effort against Louisville was very good.
If the men's team is looking for something to use as a guiding light, look no further than the lights that illuminate Houchens Smith Stadium.
The football team also played very poorly in their out of conference schedule but then conference play started and all the sudden they started winning. They even had their best year so far as a division one team, and was somehow left out of a bowl game.
The Sun Belt Conference for men's basketball is awful. It really is. The best RPI belongs to Denver which has an RPI of 31 which is very good, but then there is a significant drop. The next best belongs to MTSU at 93.
The point is, the Sun Belt isn't going to be hard for WKU to win a lot of games in, but it has to start tonight. Get off on the right foot and who knows how the 'second season' will go. And really conference play and conference tournament play is all that matters.
If the Hilltoppers start playing their best basketball now and carry it to the end of the season and can win the Sun Belt tournament, will anyone really care they lost to Furman or IUPUI? No, they won't.
I'm not saying WKU will win the Sun Belt tournament, I'm saying they have just as good of a chance as anyone else.
For the Lady Tops, well they have only played two games in almost the last three weeks, so they should be more than well rested. They are already 1-0 in conference play and need to continue that trend tonight. Who knows what will happen, last season no one thought they' d make the run they did in the conference tourney.
Both teams are young and it will be interesting to see how things go. I say both teams win tonight.
