A Gem In The Rough - Green Farm Resort

(6/15/09) - During the Crusade For Children remote at Rough River Lake, Shelia and I discovered Green Farm Resort in Falls Of Rough. It was like we stepped back in time...

I've told Shelia this many times - if I had the money, I'd love to buy and old ghost town, restore it and turn it into a resort for people to come and relax in.

Someone has done that with Falls Of Rough, Kentucky.

Welcome to Green Farm Resort located at the actual Falls of Rough just off Kentucky 110 near Rough River Lake State Park.  This is the Green Mill General Store, built in the 1800's as part of the sprawling 6,000 acre farm that had been part of the Green family for over 140 years.  The store now serves as the headquarters for the new Green Farm Resort development.

Still pretty much as the Green family left it, here's an interior shot of the Green Mill General Store which will soon be restored and stocked with grocery and country store items for future patrons.

To the right of the Green Mill General Store - and just left of the Falls - is what was the Green family sawmill.

Water so still it looks like glass...until it goes over the Falls of Rough.

This shot is computer wallpaper material for sure!  The historic Falls of Rough with the old mills weathered by time.  Stare, relax, enjoy.

On the other side of the historic falls and old mills, you see signs of the new development for Green Farm Resort.  The plan is to have several cabins and an RV park for tourists all built around this beautiful landscape.

Oh, did I forget to mention the old iron bridge?  Here I am looking back toward the Green Mill General Store and sawmill.  The bridge is for walkers only but used to handle the traffic of those doing business with sawmill many moons ago.

Me and Shelia on the Falls of Rough iron bridge.  What a gorgeous day!  I tell you, I love stuff like this!!

You drive past the general store and you come upon a beautiful golf course which was hopping this day with golfers from Kentucky and surrounding states.  This is the Lafayette club house which is part of the Green Farm Resort already open for business.

And, there is a bed and breakfast here, too!  We didn't have time to take the tour, but the Green Farm Mansion, built by the Green family just after 1821 has been fully restored and is ready for reservations.  The construction, with it's wrought iron balcony and window design reminded us of mansions we've seen along the Mississippi Gulf Coast or around New Orleans.

If you really want to get away, relax, play a little golf and take in a lot of scenery and history, this may be the stop for you.  For more information, you can contact the Green Farm Resort by going to their website, take Kentucky 79 to Falls of Rough and turn left on Kentucky 110 just before you get to the entrance of Rough River Lake State Resort Park, or call them at 270-879-3475.
