Sometimes taking Mommy out to dinner comes up on the Dad's "To-Do List." Isaac recently had a stay in the hospital with pneumonia. Being a great mom, Polly would not leave his side. She spent five nights sleeping on a hospital chair/fold-out-bed. When Isaac had fully recovered and had been home for five days, our friend Laura graciously offered her baby-sitting services. Polly was ready for a romantic, relaxing dinner for two.
I let Polly choose which Bowling Green restaurant we would be enjoying this rare moment sans kids. She made a fabulous choice. Verdi’s is downtown on the square in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but the food takes your taste buds to far off places with Bosnian, German, Greek, Italian or even American food. They’ve got a great variety.
The restaurant has a romantic atmosphere. That’s exactly the opposite of our chaotic, fast-paced, ketchup-on-the-wall excitement of our usual dining experience. It reminded me of the days I would lead my bride to the table, arm in arm, and pull the seat out for her.
Polly and I studied the menu to select the perfect food to go with this rare romantic "get-a-way."
I was surprised to see one item on Verdi’s menu. Inspired by my friend and co-worker, Gene Birk, and his lovely bride, Elizabeth, I was very tempted to see how it tasted. Kentucky Pizza – Marinara and barbeque sauce, bluegrass wild mushrooms, onions, southern spiced chicken, bacon, mozzarella
Polly’s choice - Pecan Encrusted Rainbow Trout with Apricot Chipotle - grilled trout with apricot chipotle sauce. Served with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.
My choice - Scallops and Seafood Medley Over Pasta Purses - cheese pasta purses with seared scallops topped with sweet red pepper pesto and seafood medley parm sauce.

The first thing I thought when I put the first cheese pasta purse with a scallop on my fork and in my mou... "Wooow!" It was divine. Polly’s rainbow trout was delicious too, but the scallops and pasta were the BEST thing I had tasted (from a restaurant Polly) in a loooong time. If I could, I’d eat it every night for dinner.
For dessert we decided to each get something different so we could share. Polly had the Milky Way Mousse Cake. I chose the Vanilla Bean Cheese Cake. It was a delightful way to end the meal.
Chef Mirsad Osmanivic served us food befitting for European’s finest (in this case, Kentucky’s). The price was excellent for the atmosphere, portion size, service, and taste. I left very satisfied. I felt full, but not like I just totally pigged out.
I noticed when we were being seated that Verdi’s had highchairs. I highly recommend you get a sitter and take advantage of the food and atmosphere and make your wife feel special.
It’s been a few weeks and I still find myself daydreaming of scallops.
