1 in 10.  Those are the odds of a "White Christmas" in Bowling Green, at least historically.  Just a reminder:  A "White Christmas" occurs when at least 1" of snow either falls on or is measured on Dec. 25th (in other words, it does NOT have to snow on Christmas Day to make it "white").  That being said, you know all too well if you have lived in this part of the world for some time now that South-Central KY is not the place the late Irving Berlin (or the late Bing Crosby, for that matter) would come to see tree tops glisten or to hear sleigh bells in the snow.

Below is a list of "official" White Christmas years (dating back to the early 1930s, when reliable snowfall records for BG began):

1935 (4.5" of snow on Christmas Day)

1962 (2" of snow on ground)

1963 (6" of snow on ground)

1966: (3" of snow on ground)

1969 (3.4" of snow on Christmas Day)

1989 (1" of snow on ground)

1992 (3.5" of snow on Christmas Day)

1993 (1" of snow on Christmas Day)

Notice how streaky White Christmases can be for us!  After going nearly three decades without one, our area's residents finally woke up to snow on the ground on 12/25/62.  It happened again the next year, however, followed by two more in '66 and in '69.  That's four White Christmases in eight years, quite a rare feat for anyone in the lower Ohio Valley!  Then came another dry spell, this one lasting 20 years before the period 1989-1993 spawned an amazing three White Christmases.   What's more amazing is that Bowling Green experienced significant snow actually falling on the 25th two years in a row!  That has not happened since (although we have seen some flurries on Christmas Day in quite a number of years, which is what I like to call on "off-white" Christmas).

So if past history is any indication, maybe it's just a matter of getting one "White Christmas" to open up the floodgates.  Will this be the year?  We'll soon find out.  In the meantime, may your days be merry and bright.

Shane
