First Call

Shane takes a look at the upcoming winter season, along with the forecast from Breckinridge County's Dick Frymire.

Hi folks!  Hard to believe it's already October.  While some of us may not want to think about it, winter is only a little over a couple of months away.  So it's time to check in with that fearless forecaster, Dick Frymire, with his take on the upcoming season:

Dick Frymire's winter forecast - now in its 45th year:

Oct. 18   Light frost
Nov. 14   Killing frost
Nov. 20   Flurries
Nov. 22   Tracking snow (11:20 a.m. EST)
Nov. 26   1" snow
Dec.  22  2" snow
Jan. 5     Coldest day, -12 degrees
Jan. 13    Sleet, hazardous driving
Jan. 15    6" snow
Jan. 21    5" snow
Jan. 23    3" snow
Feb. 7     2" snow
Feb. 23    First robin (10:05 a.m.)
Mar. 22    1" snow
Mar. 26   Will be 64 degrees
Apr. 2     Last snow, flurries

A couple of things that may jump out at you with that forecast:  1. He calls for 14" of snow in January!   2.  He calls for accumulating snow on Thanksgiving weekend.  That hasn't happened in these parts since 1977!

As for my personal take on the upcoming season...well, it's WAAAY too soon for me to dive into a month-to-month forecast (don't expect that from me until mid-November at the soonest!).  However, I look for an overall milder winter for South-Central compared to last year with less than half of last year's seasonal snow total, which was 15.4".  The current La Nina plays a big role in my reasoning, though there are other factors.  That's NOT to say the upcoming season will be a dull, "blow torch" kind of winter, though.  I believe the pattern will be quite active, with the Ohio Valley often serving as the battle zone between air masses.  Stay tuned!
