Welcome to the newest facet of the WBKO Sports department... a blog! We'll do our best to update you on what our sports department's doing, hopefully will help provide some insight as to just what goes into the decisions we make on a day-to-day basis and on occasion even offer a little bit of our perspective on what's going on in the world of sports.
Right now, we're in a very busy time of year. That's especially true this year - our department's been a two-person ship since Kyle Edelen's departure in January.
August is the time when football season begins, which spreads our resources and our coverage very thin. Between WKU, UK, U of L, the Titans and high schools, we're trying our best to serve many different masters (in addition to what we cover outside football). Starting last week, that meant trying to reach every high school in our viewing area to get a unique take on what the 2008 season holds. So far, we've previewed six schools' seasons... and we'll continue to look a different school each weekday until the season kicks off August 29th.
Monday night brought the start to WKU's fall training camp. The Hilltoppers were all about tempo Monday, trying to cram as many plays as possible into a workout that lasted about two hours, 15 minutes. 2008 marks the second year WKU's featured a no-huddle, spread offense... something that's designed to keep defenses off-balance. The hope is that higher-tempo practices translate to higher-tempo offense in games. Truth be told, that might actually benefit the Toppers with rule changes in college football this season (the NCAA adopted the NFL's play clock, which is 40 seconds and begins as soon as the previous play ends).
August has become even more jam-packed for us with Bowling Green East's 12-year-old all-stars in Indianapolis for the Great Lakes Regional. I'm headed to "Naptown" Tuesday afternoon for East's game with Appleton (WI) Einstein Little League, which beat Chicago's Jackie Robinson West Monday.
East needs a win badly against the Wisconsin state champs... it's mathematically possible right now for a team with two wins to be left out of the regional semifinals. A loss drops South Central Kentucky's representatives to 1-2 in pool play and in dire straits for a berth in Thursday's semis. We'll see how things go... hopefully East can carry the momentum it gained from Saturday's win over Bay City, Michigan into Tuesday's contest.
I'll try to update the blog while in Indianapolis... I'm definitely looking forward to keeping in even better touch with the community. If you have topics you'd like to see a blog on, please e-mail me at james.brandenburg@wbko.com.
