2nd WKU Scrimmage Report - August 17

Tight ends Mitchell Henry and Tyler Higbee were sharp in the Toppers' second scrimmage of training camp.

August 17, 2013

For the second time this week, the Hilltoppers held a scrimmage at Houchens Smith Stadium. Some thoughts and observations:

-Quarterback Brandon Doughty did not look nearly as sharp as he did on Tuesday. He threw two interceptions, including a pick-six to freshman Marcus Ward.

-However, Doughty does not shoulder all of the blame. He was not the only quarterback who struggled. In fact, the passing game as a whole looked out of sync in terms of protection, route running and catching passes. There were several dropped balls on Saturday, including two from Willie McNeal.

-No surprise, the tight ends looked very good, especially Mitchell Henry and Tyler Higbee.

-Redshirt freshman running back Anthony Wales continues to flash his talent in live action.

-The first team defense played well. That group showed a lot of consistency earlier in the week and that continued today. Judging purely from today's scrimmage, It looks like the starting defensive line could be Gavin Rocker, Bryan Shorter, Bar'ee Boyd, and Devante Terrell. Rafael Cox is in the mix too.

-I mentioned true freshman safety Marcus Ward getting the interception on Brandon Doughty. He has been solid this week. Ward stuck out as one of the top defensive performers in both scrimmages.

-Sophomore Leon Allen dressed out, but did not get any reps. He has missed time this week battling an injury.

-Sophomore running back Marquis Sumler appeared to tweak his ankle late in the scrimmage.
