Some High School Football Observations

What has surprised you in the first five weeks of the season?

September 17, 2011

We have reached the halfway point in the high school football regular season. Some teams have started district play, others have not. But we are starting to get a pretty good idea of what to expect in the second half of the season and beyond. Some thoughts about what we have seen thus far:

-After losing some really good players like Cortez Barber and Demonte Smith, I never would have guessed Warren Central would be as good as they are. Mike Rogers has done another outstanding job with the Dragons. They are legitimately a top five team in Class 5A, maybe top three. Quarterback Michael Bush is getting better every single week.

-Bowling Green is good. Really good.

-While we are on the subject, October 14 is shaping up to be something special. For those unaware, that is when Bowling Green and Warren Central meet, a game which will almost certainly decide the district champion. Both teams should be undefeated and there is no love lost between the Purples and Dragons.

-If Allen County-Scottsville can figure things out on offense, the Patriots have the potential to go on a nice run. The Patriots have really struggled to score against quality opponents. On the flip side, the ACS defense has played very well, holding Boyle County and Glasgow to 21 and 14 points respectively. Franklin-Simpson is probably the favorite in Class 4A, District 2, but don't sleep on the Patriots.

-A shout out to several teams in south central Kentucky which have perfect records through five games: Edmonson County, Butler County, Hart County, Russell County, and Ohio County. You can argue whether or not these teams have played challenging schedules all day if you want. The simple fact is these teams are undefeated. And these are programs you may not expect to be 5-0. It is a good thing for the programs and even better for the communities that follow them. Fans should enjoy the ride.

-Yes, I realize Bowling Green and Warren Central are also undefeated and deserve plenty of credit as well.

-I think South Warren will pick up the win this Friday against Caverna. It would be the first ever varsity win for the Spartans. The program is enduring some growing pains right now, but I have seen them in action twice this season and they're getting better. More important, they're playing hard. Be patient South Warren fans. In a couple seasons, the Spartans will be just fine.

I ask you, what are your thoughts on the first five weeks of the season?
