The Hilltoppers completed their first scrimmage of training camp this morning. Some thoughts and observations:
-Brandon Doughty is the clear favorite to be the starting quarterback. He looked solid as usual and I think he is miles ahead of the next guy. In his first drive, Doughty was a perfect 6-for-6 and completed his first seven passes overall.
-Behind Doughty, it is a toss-up. Damarcus Smith struggled today. He did not look good at all. His day included a fumble on a scramble and two interceptions, although one of them was not his fault. True freshman Todd Porter looked like the best quarterback after Doughty. He is not the fastest quarterback you will ever see, but he did make a couple of nice plays with his legs.
-It was a good day for running backs. Antonio Andrews did what he normally does, and I was impressed with redshirt freshman Anthony Wales. He showed some real burst and probably had the play of the day, outrunning defenders and scoring on a long catch and run. Redshirt freshman Darmontre Warr also had a nice day.
-At this point, I would be shocked if freshman Taywan Taylor does not start at wide receiver against Kentucky. He has been the talk of training camp so far. This morning, he played exclusively with the first team offense. Fellow freshman Nicolas Norris also played with the 1s today. The Toppers could have two freshman start at wide receiver on August 31.
-Not a good day for sophomore WR Austin Aikens. He dropped two easy balls, one of which resulted in a pick six.
-The first team defense was just okay. They did not look bad, but they did not look great either. Nothing really stood out.
-One thing we did not see today was the first team offense go up against the first team defense.
-Freshman Joe Occhipinti appears to have won the kicking job. He has looked sharp through the first week and a half.
