Since the last week of April, a number of storm drainage grates have been stolen from Bowling Green streets. These large metal grates allow drainage for water run-off.
Now, authorities have discovered not only storm grates have been stolen, but several meter and manhole covers as well. Many of the meter covers have been stolen from behind shopping centers or in low light areas.
This is a serious public safety hazard to pedestrians, cyclists and
Serious injury or death, as well as severe property damage could occur, as a result of these thefts.
In addition, these grates and covers are costing taxpayers money to
Authorities believe the thieves are stealing these items to
sell as scrap metal. The stolen metal cost thousands of dollars to
replace but only bring pennies when recycled.
