The suit filed in Jefferson Circuit Court in Louisville contends state law gives parents the right to enroll their children in the public school nearest their home.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports the suit was filed by Louisville attorney Teddy Gordon, who successfully challenged the Jefferson County school system's desegregation plan.

The suit was filed on behalf of parent Scott Arnold, who whose son was assigned to an elementary school near downtown Louisville. Arnold wanted his son to attend a school closer to their suburban home.

Jefferson County schools Superintendent Sheldon Berman says he's confident the student assignment plan complies with state law.
