Revolution 91.7, the student-run campus radio station of Western Kentucky University, is hosting its third annual Pooch Pageant this Saturday, March 31 at the H.P. Thomas Bark Park on Cave Mill Road. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with the shows starting at 1:30 p.m. The registration fee is $20 per dog, and all proceeds go directly to the Hildreth Animal Adoption Center. There will be three categories in which dogs can compete: small, medium, and large.

“We are very excited to be able to host another Pooch Pageant this year,” said Kayla Dowdy, station manager at Revolution 91.7. “Last year, we raised more than $300 for Hildreth, and this year, I hope we can do even more. Hildreth runs entirely on private donations, so every penny we can raise will help.”

The event began in 2010 as an alternative way to generate funds for the Hildreth Animal Adoption Center and proved to be a great success. Around 20 members of the community participated in the event, and this year the Revolution staff is hoping to have many more.

“The Bark Park is an excellent place to have the Pooch Pageant,” Dowdy said. “There is a lot of space for dogs to run, play, and be happy. The event is held in a fenced area, so dog owners don’t have to worry about losing their pets.”

Local groomers and handlers will judge the dogs on criteria such as appearance, behavior, and temperament. First, second, and third place will be awarded in each size category. Judges will also select an overall Best in Show from the three first-place winners. Each winner will receive an array of prizes donated from local businesses.

Revolution 91.7 not only provides Bowling Green and the surrounding area with a commercial-free mix of college progressive music on air; it also supports several local charities throughout the academic year and is a driving force in the local music scene. Everyone is invited to attend the Pooch Pageant as participants and spectators. Attendees may donate to Hildreth even if they do not enter dogs into the shows.
