The Western Kentucky University Board of Regents is trying to avoid future problems with salary increases by requiring anyone seeking a pay raise of $5,000 or more to justify it in writing.
It is the regents' response to controversial salary increases for WKU administrators last year.
A dispute arose in October 2009, when a contract extension proposed for former Athletic Director Wood Selig, would have raised his base pay of $141,000 by $34,000, plus a four-year annuity payment of $25,000, and bonuses based on team performance.
The proposed raises angered students and faculty members following a four-percent tuition hike, and bonuses of $500 to $1,000 for faculty, instead of raises.
