The Logan County Sheriff's Office says Mary Ella Leid died from a direct lightning strike at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, when a thunderstorm passed through.
They say she had been digging potatoes in an open field behind her home on Highland Lick Road near Lewisburg.
"About 29 years of law enforcement," said Logan County Sheriff's Detective Jim Ray, "I've encountered a couple of incidences where a couple of people have been struck by lightning. The female was 16 years old and she had a shovel in her hand, and we figured that might have attracted the lightning."
Leid suffered injuries to her head and neck area from the strike. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Logan County Coroner.
Residents say Mary-Ella's Amish family operates a fruit and vegetable stand that is a favorite of nearby Logan Countians.
