Rand Paul is retaliating against the news report that implied he is not a board-certified ophthalmologist.
The Kentucky Republican candidate for U.S. Senate came to our studio Tuesday, to say he passed his board certification when he entered into practice in 1995, and has passed it three more times since then.
He created his own National Board of Ophthalmology" after a dispute with the "American Board of Ophthalmology" grandfathering in older doctors without having them re-certified.
"There some older ophthalmologists in town who took the same exam as me and never recertified," Paul says, "and the board says, 'Oh, that's fine.' The younger doctors need to do it but the older doctor's don't. I think the doctors that have been in practice longer, may need it as much or more than anybody else."
And Paul says the reason his group has not been certified is because the American Board of Medical Specialties, which certifies ophthalmologists, was founded by the group he left.
Concerning the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Paul says regardless of who is found at fault, right now the emphasis should be on cleaning the oil up!
"When you have a disaster of these proportions," says Paul, "everybody should be working together instead of pointing fingers and saying, 'Your fault, your fault, your fault.' We'll eventually figure that out and that's an important process, but right now let's clean it up. So I'd say the Coast Guard and BP should be working together, and that's kinda what we've finally done now."
And on the subject of our border with Mexico, Paul says we should control our borders for not only security reasons, but for economic ones as well.
"I don't think we can afford to pay for 15 million people coming across the border who will get school benefits," says Paul, "as well as health care benefits. So I think you have to control your borders for economic reasons. Milton Friedman once said, 'You can't have open borders in a welfare state,' and that's kinda what we've got right now."
And Paul says the state of Arizona has the right to make laws concerning crime and benefits, to protect its legal citizens.
