Future teachers and psychologists at WKU will soon have a new home. Construction is right on schedule for the building scheduled to open in January of 2011.

It may be six months until it opens, but work continues at a fever pitch at the new College of Education Building.

"I think part of the key to how that building looks and how it will function for us is the fact that the architects came, I don't know how many days, and listened to us in terms of our needs, " said Sam Evans, Dean of the College of Education.

Those needs included office space for more than 100 faculty members, twenty classrooms and labs, as well as an Education Resource Center.
But what will catch your eye the most is the entrance. "There's a dramatic main entrance to the building which entails a grand staircase and full three story atrium."

Project Manager Ben Johnson also notes this is the first LEED certified building on campus, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. "It's an extra effort being put into sustainability, good stewards of the environment, energy efficiency, that sort of thing," Johnson said. "We'll be seeing more of that on campus."

The building is also outfitted with the very latest technology.

"There are miles and miles of data cable in the building, thousands of data drops that are hard wired, building is also completely wireless for WiFi."

"We've tried to make sure every classroom is as technology rich as it can be based on needs of the classroom."

The education building is also the latest to be topped with WKU's signature cupola, capping off a building that has all the components for success!

"The capacity is going to be there. Our challenge and opportunity is to take the capacity the building will provide, and use it to relate to work we are doing."

Several units will continue to be housed in Tate Page Hall, even after the College of Education moves to the new building in December, including the Literacy Center, Navitas, and others. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
