"I feel like I was raised by a mom that is the most amazing and giving woman too. She has probably taught me this for sure," says Givens.

OHIO COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) - Many say her heart is as big as the community. Her effort to help those in need brings many people tears of joy.

"She went out of her way and did this for me. I don't know if I can ever repay her but she knows how much I love her and how much she has totally changed me for the better," says Darlena Embry.

February 24, 2010 is a day that changed Darlena Embry's life forever. A car accident crushed the right side of her body, leaving her in a wheelchair. It was a long road to recovery made easier by Sandy Givens, who organized fundraisers and helped build Embry a handicap accessible home.

"Oh I have had people through the years think I am crazy because I built Darlena a house. But that's my friend and that's what I have to do. I feel like everybody should help their friends," says Givens.

Her helpful spirit has also given others a new life. Sharon Mason is a recovered drug addict. She wished all her life to work in a beauty shop, but wasn't given the chance until Sandy came along.

"No one was going to take me in as a beautician over what I have done. So I came to her and she opened her doors up to me and brought me in. But also she has taught me how to be a person and shown me love and kindness and it's ok to hold your head up high," says Mason.

Sandy's giving continues today. A donation jar sits in her beauty shop for a mother suffering from cancer. Her helpful attitude is from family influence.

"I feel like I was raised by a mom that is the most amazing and giving woman too. She has probably taught me this for sure," says Givens.

For continuing to put others first we honor Sandy Givens as this week's Hometown Hero.
