Dr. Daniel Simon and his staff were returning from a retreat to Coasta Rica in April when a fellow passenger fell into medical distress on the plane.
The first page for a doctor went unanswered, and as tension grew on the plan, a second page was issued for anyone with medical training to come and assist.
Dr. Simon recalls telling the stewardess that he was a dentist so he had some medical knowledge, and that "There was a lady that was laying on the ground, and she was unresponsive, not conscious at all."
As a dentist, he has been trained in basical medical responses, and was able to determine that the lady way hypoglycemic, so he gave her some food and drink and monitored her vital signs the remainder of the flight.
"I wouldn't want something to happen to this lady and know that I was on the plane and might have been able to do something and had that on my conscience," says Dr. Simon.
After the plane landed, the lady was whisked away by a medical team to receive proper treatment.
Dr. Simon still doesn't know what happened to the lady he helped, but a few weeks later United Airlines sent him a letter concerning his actions that states:
Dear Dr. Simon,
On behalf of United Airlines please accept our thanks for your assistance on a flight. We are grateful that you were so generous in sharing your personal time, compassion, and expertise with another passenger on flight 1511 on April 29, 2012.
For his heroism in the skies, we honor Dr. Daniel Simon as a Hometown Hero.
