FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Residents of one of the nation's top tobacco-producing states would be banned from smoking cigarettes in public places, under a bill that has cleared its first legislative hurdle.
The House Health and Welfare Committee voted 10-2 Tuesday to stop people from lighting up inside workplaces, jails, bars, restaurants, even private homes, if those homes are used for child care or adult daycare.
The measure had been expected to come up for a vote twice in the last week, but had to be postponed both times because key supporters had been unavailable.
The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce has endorsed the proposal that now goes to the full House for consideration.
