Linda Leigh Wilkerson, 71, of Alvaton, passed away at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at the Hospice Center in Bowling Green.
She was born on April 26, 1941, to the late Armond and Mabel Cottrell Thompson. After being saved, she joined Cub Run Missionary Baptist Church in 1953. On Dec. 20, 1958, she wed Laymon Wilkerson.
Linda held education to a high regard. She graduated from Cub Run High School in 1958 and went on to pursue a degree in education from Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. She shared her love of learning with others by teaching at Hart County Schools, Jefferson County Schools, Bowling Green City Schools, Greater Clark County Schools in Indiana and Caverna Independent Schools, where she taught for 21 years of her 30-year career.
Linda had a gift for knitting and crocheting, which she shared with Hillvue Prayer Shawl Group. She was a loyal contributor to the Bob Kirby Library Branch mitten tree, and she was also a volunteer at the Hospice Center in Bowling Green.
Linda is survived by her husband of 54 years, Laymon; a son, Gerard Wilkerson and his wife, Terry, of Alvaton; two daughters, Demetra Grubbs-Clark and her husband, Mark, of Horse Cave, and Talara Dennison and her husband, Michael, of Munfordville; three brothers, Ralph Armond Thompson of Priceville, Doug Thompson of Gendale and Kelly Thompson of Jeffersonville, Ind.; four sisters, Brenda Martin of Jeffersonville, Ind., Martha Smith of Mammoth Cave, Vanessa Thompson of Cub Run and Patricia Cowan of Cub Run; seven grandchildren, Macy Grubbs and his wife, Ashleigh, of Glasgow, Kayla Rountree and her husband, Justin, of Canmer, Mallory Dennison and Logan Dennison, both of Munfordville, Maelyn Grubbs of Horse Cave, and Gabrielle and Maya Wilkerson, both of Alvaton; four great-grandchildren, Kamden, Konner and Oakleigh Grubbs and Braxton Underwood; and a son-in law, Arlene Grubbs.
Funeral services for Linda Wilkerson will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Sego Funeral Home, with Bro. Steve Ayers officiating. Burial will be in Horse Cave Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Sunday at Sego Funeral Home. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green or the American Cancer Society.
