Darlene Spencer Keown Smith died Jan. 10, 2013, in Bowling Green.
She was a born in Riverside to Sylvia Jewel Moore and Charles Hayden Spencer Sr. on May 1, 1933. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Ernest Otto Keown Jr. of Hawesville and Paul Julius Smith of Smyrna, Tenn.; her daughter, Debra Denise Keown Jordan of Bowling Green; and her two brothers, Charles Hayden Spencer Jr. of Cox Creek and Delbert Waddle Spencer of Phoenix.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Kevin Otto Keown, M.D., and his wife, Judith, of Jesup, Ga.; five grandchildren, Shellie Willett Hardcastle and her husband, Dr. Samuel Hardcastle, of Bowling Green, Shanon Willett Simons and her husband, James Gregory, of Nashville, Kelly Keown Dilger and her husband, Jerry Joseph, of Big Lake, Minn., Kyle Keown of Jesup, Ga., and Kristen Keown Tangen of Jesup, Ga.; and five great-grandchildren, Kadyn Dilger, Jacey Dilger, Brayden Tangen, Kaydee Tangen and future baby Hardcastle.
Ms. Smith was a 1950 graduate of College High School in Bowling Green and attended college at Western Kentucky University and Bowling Green Vocational School. She was active in several clubs when she was younger, such as Girl Scouts and Rainbow Girls. In Hawesville (where she lived for 14 years) she was extensively involved in Homemakers, the PTA, bridge club and Sunday school class at Hawesville Baptist Church. She was an active member of the DAR Stones River chapter in Smyrna, Tenn., and she was a commissioned Kentucky Colonel by former Gov. Louie B. Nunn. She attended Eastwood Baptist Church in Bowling Green. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and was a world traveler.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service.
