Elizabeth Carter Utley, 91, of Bowling Green, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Magnolia Village Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 19, 1921, in Frankfort and graduated from Bridgeport High School. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Maye Gillispie; her husband of nearly 50 years, W.O. Carter; her second husband, W.E. Utley; a granddaughter, Pamela White; a brother, David Gillispie; and a sister, Sue Lageman.
Mrs. Utley is a longtime member of Rich Pond Baptist Church and loved attending every service or activity. She was an active volunteer in the church until her 91st birthday. She and her husband, W.O. Carter, owned and operated Carter Hardware and Grocery in the Rich Pond community for 17 years. She loved spending Sunday afternoons with the kids and grandkids and was always eager to work a puzzle or play SkipBo.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rich Pond Baptist Church, with burial in Plano Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rich Pond Baptist Church.
Mrs. Utley is survived by two daughters, Barbara White (Jimmy) of Bowling Green, and Margaret Pinkstaff (Pat) of Irmo, S.C.; a son, Willie Carter Jr. (Carol) of Bowling Green; a sister, Dorothy Mitchell of Pinellas Park, Fla.; five grandchildren, Karen Swiney, Kristie Smerowski, David White, Melissa Williams and Megan Pinkstaff; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
