Polly Elkin Newman, 78, of Bowling Green, passed away at her residence on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Maud Elkin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Roscoe Elkin Jr. and Dallas Elkin.
She was a graduate of College High and Bowling Green Business University. She was a cheerleader in high school and was on the girls’ basketball team. Polly had been an active member of the Republican Women's Club, was a member of the Boys & Girls Club and attended Trinity Christian Church and First Christian Church.
Polly enjoyed playing bridge for many years and she enjoyed traveling and sightseeing with her daughter, Janet. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing tennis and bowling. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Tajer and her husband, Hassan, of Hoover, Ala.; a son, David Newman and his wife, Teresa, of Bowling Green; five grandchildren, Steven Tajer of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Stephanie Tajer of Hoover, Ala., Erin Whitaker of Louisville, and Josh Newman and Will Newman, both of Bowling Green; an aunt, Dorothy Cole of Bowling Green; and several nieces and cousins. She will be missed by her family.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, with burial in Fairview Cemetery No. 1. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 8:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home.
