Funeral Home: J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel
Granville Ervin Rountree, 86, of Bowling Green, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 6:42 a.m. at Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
He was born in Rocky Hill in Edmonson County on March 15, 1926. He was the son of the late William Bradley and Iva Mamie House Rountree. He was also preceded in death by a son, William Rountree; a daughter, Patricia Stifler; and his sisters, Alene Kirk and Antha Boston. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground combat. He was wounded on the Rhine River. He also served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of Three Springs Road Baptist Church. He was a member of Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge No. 326 in Florida, the Scottish Rite and the Bahie Shrine Temple both in Oralndo, Fla. He was a life member of the DAV, American Legion Post No. 23 and Moose Lodge. He worked as a truck driver for Houchens Industries before moving to Florida, then as a veterinarian’s assistant for Dr. James Townsend of Ormond Beach, Fla.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joy Ann Simmons Rountree of Bowling Green; his daughter, Elaine Roberts and her husband, Buck, of Hadley; a sister, Irene Thompson of Frankfort; brothers, Jesse M. Rountree and his wife Louise, of Hodgenville, and James Ernest Rountree and his wife, Loretta, of Shepherdsville; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, with burial in the Rocky Hill Masonic Cemetery with military honors. A Masonic service will be Saturday at 7 p.m.
