Col. Ercie J. Leach, U.S. Army (retired), 81, of Summerville, S.C., entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 1, 2013, at home after a prolonged illness.

The funeral service will be conducted at noon Saturday at Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. At a later date, he will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 75817, Topeka, KS 66675 or Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 W. Third Street South, Summerville, SC 29483.

He was born to Lucy and Riley Leach on Sept. 26, 1931, in Beaver Dam. He attended Western Kentucky University and graduated from Omaha University in Omaha, Neb. He enlisted in the Army in 1952. During his military career, he was an artillerymen and a pilot. Some highlights of his career include working at the Pentagon and flying President Harry S. Truman. He earned many citations and awards, including a Legion of Merit Award, a Purple Heart and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired in 1983 with 31 years in the service.

He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville and attended the Sue Knight Sunday school class.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorrine Leach; daughters Kathy Weeks of Summerville, Suzanne Ferrari (Randy) of Dallas, Michelle Schoenhardt (Tim) of Sacramento, Calif., and Danielle Gunter (Marty) of Summerville; five grandchildren, Shelby Ferrari, Meghan and Hannah Schoenhardt and Lucy and Riley Gunter; two Brothers, Willis Leach of Bowling Green and Logan Leach of Beaver Dam; two Sisters, Beverly Hiatt of Lake Charles, La., and Joan Hobdy of Beaver Dam; and many extended family members and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.
