Essie Lee Jenkins Phelps, 88, of Rockfield, passed away May 2, 2013, at Vanderbilt Hospital surrounded by her family.
She was born March 20, 1925, in Warren County to the late William Herman Jenkins and Lattie Emma Green Jenkins. She was the widow of Cletus R. (Bill) Phelps.
Essie was preceded in death by two sons, Roy E. Phelps and Jerry Rex Phelps; a great-grandson, Micheal Benjamin Davis; a granddaughter, Rosa LeAnn Phelps Johnson; two brothers, Vester and Freeman Jenkins; and five sisters, Geneva Martin, Maggie Basham Carter, Lorene Basham Graham, Florence Evelyn Smith and Beulah (Boots) Douglas.
Essie retired from Fruit of the Loom (The Derby, Union Underwear) after 35 years. She was the owner of Essie’s Doll Hospital for 38 years. Essie was a charter member of Barber Way General Baptist Church for 40 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy F. Meador of Rockfield; grandchildren, Jeanette Meador Epley of Bowling Green, Fred R. (Buster) Meador of Rockfield, Lisa Phelps Warren of Florida, Diana Barnhart of Weirton, W.Va.; great-grandchildren, Stacey Renfro of Bowling Green, Nicole (Nikki) Barman of Bowling Green, Jessica and Heather Barnhart of Weirton, W.Va., Paige Meador of Rockfield, Tyler Meador of Rockfield, Dillon Meador of Rockfield, Richard Davis, Brandon Pearson, Travis Pearson of Bowling Green, Melony, Joey, and David Warren of Florida; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and stepgreat-granddaughters Lana Davis of Rockfield, Taylar and Brook Epley of Bowling Green.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at J.C. Kirby and Son Broadway Chapel with burial in Still Cemetery in Rockfield. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
