Funeral Home: Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Ala.
Katie Mae Sanders Garner, 91, of Shelby County, Ala., passed away on April 25, 2013.
She was born and raised in Rocky Hill in Edmonson County. An independent spirit, Ms. Garner obtained her pilot’s license while working in Louisville during World War II. She attended the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City and was a graduate of Samford University and the Birmingham School of Law. A longtime resident of the Birmingham area, Ms. Garner was a member of the Samford Faculty Wives’ Club and enjoyed cultivating the flowers and other plants in the natural areas in her yard, reading, cooking and playing the piano. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ruth Sanders of Rocky Hill, and her brother, Jack Burton Sanders of Park City.
Survivors include Ms. Garner’s son, Bob (Suzi) Garner of Pelham, Ala.; and granddaughters, Jessica Marie (Nathan) Johnson of Huntsville, Ala., and Abigail Lee Garner of New York City.
A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Ala., with the Rev. John Ray officiating. The family will receive friends before the service, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
