Wendell “Wimp” Gates Mayes, 80 of Rochester, passed away July 7, 2013, at the Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.

Wendell was born May 8, 1933, in Butler County to the late Bilson and Ellie Gates Mayes and husband of the late Mavis Imogene Jenkins Mayes. He was a Korean War Army veteran, retired from TVA, attended Rochester Baptist Church and an avid UK fan. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford and Tom Mayes.

He is survived by two daughters, Joan Payne (Jerry) and Gail Vanderver, both of Huntsville; two grandsons, Brent Clark of Huntsville and Bruce Vanderver of Nashville; a granddaughter, Kim McGeehee; a sister, Thelma Miller of Beechmont; four great-grandchildren, Brevon, Preston, Kaylee and Josh; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Jones Funeral Chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. with Bro. Roger Heltsley, Bro. Bobby Allen and Bro. Darrell Sisk officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until funeral time Friday at the funeral home.
