Thornton Rudolph “Rudy” Belcher, 89, of Sugar Grove, passed away Aug.17, 2013, at Greenview Regional Hospital.
Mr. Belcher was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Butler County to the late Ithra Belcher and Rena Ragland Belcher. He was a retired diesel mechanic and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Belcher was the NSDAR veteran of the year in 2009. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 280, a member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and his pastimes included farming and fishing. Mr. Belcher was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary Belcher; and a brother, Phillip Belcher.
Mr. Belcher’s survivors include his wife of 69 years, Doris Applin Belcher of Sugar Grove; a son, Kenneth Belcher of Griffin, Ga.; a daughter, Evonne Mercer of Louisville; six grandchildren, Michelle Ewing and husband Shawn of Bowling Green, Melissa Heaton and husband Warren of Los Angeles, Chad Belcher of Conway, Ark., Marsha Mercer of Louisville, Amy Coury and husband Walker of Hawaii and Garrett Belcher and wife Katie of High Falls, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Teresa Bell and Jennifer Belcher, both of Sugar Grove.
Funeral service will be at Smith Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuedsay, with the Rev. Marvin Carson and the Rev. Gene Hadden officiating. Burial will be in Hill Haven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m., and from 8 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
