Loving mother, daughter and sister, Lorraine “Lori” Gail Monroe, 55, of Bowling Green, passed away Nov. 30, 2013, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after a courageous 12-year battle with lung cancer.
She became a national advocate for lung cancer patients during her illness and co-founded the Lung Cancer Foundation of America in hopes of shining a light on the need for lung cancer research.
A native of Fairmount, Ind., Lori was born Oct. 28, 1958, to Robert “Bob” and Marilyn Whitehead. She graduated from Madison-Grant High School and attended Florida College. Lori earned a nursing degree from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green and dedicated her life to serving others as a registered nurse. She enjoyed camping, traveling, being in Colorado and the outdoors.
Lori is survived by her parents; three daughters, Emily Monroe and Alyson (John) Perry, both of Bowling Green, and Kate Uebelhack of Indianapolis; her grandmother, Hazel Maley of Fairmount, Ind.; two brothers, Brian (Susan) Whitehead of Fairmount and Jeremy (Angie) Whitehead of Dallas, Ga.; a niece, Carly (Aaron) Vogel; a nephew, Blake Whitehead; a granddaughter, Grace Womack; and a number of other loving relatives and close friends.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel at 820 Lovers Lane. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with memorial service at 5 p.m.
