Mildred S. Curd Hawkins, 103, died June 8, 2014, at Seneca Place, formerly Twinbrook Nursing Home, of Louisville.
The Warren County native was a retired educator of the Warren County and Bowling Green City schools and also taught in the high schools at Covington and Annapolis, Md.
She was a graduate of Bowling Green College of Commerce (Business University) and Western Kentucky University. Mrs. Hawkins was a life member of Western Kentucky University Alumni. She maintained membership in National Society Daughters of American Revolution, Kentucky Education Association, Bowling Green Lioness Club, Larths Club and was the oldest living alumnus of Bowling Green High School. She researched and published the L.L. Smith family genealogy. Mrs. Hawkins also assisted customers at the family business, Hawkins Upholstery Inc. She retired after completing several years teaching at Rich Pond Elementary School.
She was the daughter of the late Nat H. and Essie Smith Curd and the wife of the late James A. Hawkins.
She is survived by a son, James A. Hawkins III (Rose Marie) of Louisville; a sister, Mary C. Logan of Bowling Green; granddaughter Jennifer H. Clayton (Chad); a grandson, Joel A. Hawkins (Jackie); three great-grandchildren, Jackson L. Hawkins, Abigail Clayton and Cali Clayton; and several cousins, Alberta Sizemore Smith, L. Jack Smith Jr., Douglas Smith, Gayle Smith Carroll, Carol Smith Asher and Charlotte Smith Rather.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, Bowling Green.
