Bowling Green's FOP gives back to the community

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- The Fraternal Order of Police in Bowling Green is giving back to the community by making sure families around the area have just what they need for Christmas this year.

The 40-year tradition started with just one family and has now grown into 7-tons of food, feeding more than 85 families in need.

Not only is this a way for the Bowling Green FOP to help the less fortunate,
it also helps families get to know their local responders.

"It's an opportunity for us as the police to let the community know that we're here," said Shawn Helbig. "Even after the calls service ... but we are here for our community ... and that's what we dedicated our lives to do."

Even though the FOP sponsors the gift baskets, delivery to the families is done by the entire community.

Some local JROTC members get involved, and the housing authorities also help by providing delivery trucks.
