FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Esteban Santiago has made a court appearance in Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- answering questions from a magistrate judge in a clear voice before being ordered back behind bars.

Santiago is facing charges in the fatal shooting of five people in Fort Lauderdale's airport on Friday.
He told the judge today that he understands the charges, which could carry the death penalty.
More than a dozen officers kept watch outside the courthouse.
