In eight regular season games against in-state opponents, Western Kentucky boasts a 7-1 record at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Hilltoppers have the opportunity to improve upon that mark when No. 19 Kentucky comes to town at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The game comes 20 days after WKU traveled to Lexington to face the Wildcats and fell by a score of 17-2 on March 1. Kevin Lambert hit his first career home run in the loss and six other Hilltoppers added a base hit.
Western (7-14) started its run at Bowling Green Ballpark with a victory vs. Kentucky on April 20, 2010 when the Hilltoppers scored 16 runs in the second inning without the Wildcats recording an out. The hosts eventually won by a score of 24-8 in front of 6,183 fans, which was the largest crowd to ever watch a college baseball game in the state of Kentucky.
The Hilltoppers are 4-0 against Kentucky at Bowling Green Ballpark and 3-1 against Louisville, outscoring their in-state rivals by a combined score of 82-37.
The Wildcats (15-6) will pitch Zach Thompson, who previously faced the Hilltoppers in the March 1 matchup. The lefty threw six innings and allowed one earned run – Lambert’s solo home run – while striking out seven and walking two on a windy evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
UK is coming off a three-game sweep of Texas A&M.
The Hilltoppers’ starter remains TBA at this time.
