KSP investigates fatal accident on I-69

MORTONS GAP, Ky. (WBKO) -- Kentucky State Police is investigating a fatal collision that happened around 3:40 p.m. on September 16 near mile marker 108 on Interstate 69 in Hopkins County.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed that Maynard W. Pemberton, 80 years old, from Cedar Lake, Indiana, was operating his 2005 Dodge minivan northbound on I-69 in the southbound lanes.

Officials say Pemberton entered the construction area that is restricted to one lane.

According to officials, Sonja L. Adams, 40 years old, of Nortonville, Kentucky, was operating her 2009 Toyota passenger car southbound in the construction area.

KSP say Ms. Adams was unable to avoid Mr. Pemberton’s vehicle, striking her vehicle head on.

The Hopkins County Coroner, Dennis Mayfield, pronounced both Pemberton and Adams dead at the scene.

Trooper Cody Kromer is investigating the collision.

Kentucky State Police Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Hopkins County Sheriff Department, Madisonville Fire Department, Anton Fire Department, South Hopkins Fire Department, Medical Center EMS and PHI Air Medical.
