BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Local firefighters are reaching out to the community to give tips on how to make sure your home is as safe as possible when it comes to fire prevention.
The Barren River Fire Department runs off of volunteers, as do several other local fire stations. They say they do the job because they want to be there to help their neighbors.
Stephen Grossl, Chief of the Barren River Volunteer Fire Department, says these are some of the best ways to protect your home:
"Always check, first and foremost your smoke alarms, fire detectors-- make sure they're working properly, change the batteries out. If you have candles -- if you light candles -- keep them away from blowing curtains in a house. Glade plug-ins in the wall, people sometimes forget that they're plugged in there. They'll burn up into your walls. Keeping power-strips clear of debris -- don't cover them up with rugs, blankets," he says.
"Just always be aware," he adds. "Sometimes you have to prepare for the what-ifs and hopefully it'll never happen."
He also says doing routine checks around your home is a good idea to make sure everything is running as it should be.
