LUCAS, Ky. (WBKO)--- For many people, Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of boating season and time spent on the lake.
Conservation officers from the Department of Fish and Wildlife share some tips on how to stay safe while enjoying the holiday.
One officer states that each boat should have enough life jackets for every person on the boat.
"If there are eight people, there must be eight life jackets. they have to be the proper size for the people that they are intended to be worn by," says Conservation Officer Brandon Boone.
"Anyone under the age of 12 has to have their life jacket on whenever the boat is underway".
He adds, while boats 16 ft. or longer are required to have a Type 4 portable flotation device, which is a PFD designed to be thrown, not worn, those particular PDFs do not count as being a wearable PFD.
Conservation officers say the best way to stay safe on the water is to familiarize yourself with boating laws in the state of Kentucky.
