New UAW president hopes to play helpful role in community

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky (WBKO) -- Corvette Plant workers have new representation in the United Automobile Makers Union.

Jack Bowers has been with UAW and been president of UAW Local 2164 for about a month.

He hopes to strengthen communication among members and General Motors as well as continue to expand the local UAW.

"These are good jobs," he said. "They're hard jobs, but they're good paying jobs, and that's what we want, just like we've expanded the [performance build center]. It's going to be expanding and we hope to hire more people next year."

Bowers believes his job is about protecting people, and doing something to help them. He doesn't want to limit that help to just those that are members of UAW.

"I'm glad I work for Corvette," he said. "I'm glad I work for GM. We've been blessed with what we do have, and we like working with the community. I think when people put a face to a corporation, not just a name to it, they say, ' Oh yea. They're not that bad after all."

Bowers was also voted as a delegate for Local 2164 and has already visited Detroit, MI as a local representative.
