BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Wednesday was a monumental day for Western Kentucky University, Warren County and the city of Bowling Green.

Officials from the community came together at the Bowling Green City Hall to celebrate Wednesday as Safe Communities America Day with a proclamation signing.

WKU Director of Environmental Health and Safety David Oliver says Western and Bowling Green should be extra proud of this accomplishment.

"Western was the 4th university in the world to get the designation and the third community in the state of Kentucky, so we're very proud of that. It's basically an affirmation that we have appropriate programs in place to safeguard our faculty, staff, students and visitors."

David Oliver says it took 20 to 30 different safety related departments in Bowling Green to gain this accreditation.
