"School Bus Cafe" preparing to feed kids free meals

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) -- The free meals on the bus go round and round for a second summer here in Warren County.

"Hopefully on Tuesday, there will be a large number of kids waiting for us for a chicken sandwich," Warren County Public Schools Nutrition and Dining Services Director Gina Howard stated.

A summer meal program called "School Bus Cafe" put on by Warren County Public Schools.

Starting May 30th going all the way to July 28th, School Bus Cafe will be stopping at neighborhoods like Rock Creek, Bryant Way and Lee Pointe to feed any child that's 18 and under for free.

Warren County Public Schools' Gina Howard says the summer menu should appeal to all hungry children.

"We're serving things that our kids like. We've picked things from our menu, such as corn dogs, cheeseburgers and pizza, we'll be there. We're also serving lots of fresh fruits and vegetables just like we do during the school year, and, ice cold milk."

Warrem County Public Schools Food Service Supervisor Kelly Holt says the mobile cafe has a simple, yet effective plan to feed as many children as they need to.

"They'll come in, pick up a carton of milk, they'll step this way and our food service employee will be able to hand them a meal from our hot and cold holding items. Once they get their meal, they'll go sit down anywhere they'd like to on our bus."

And School Bus Cafe driver Melanie Edison says it fills her heart to watch her school kids fill their stomachs.

"They love it when they see the bus coming. And, they're like 'the bus is coming, the bus is coming!' and they know they're going to get a free meal. And, some of the places we stop we have seventy-something children that we feed. That's just a joy to know that you're feeding children and they're going to have a good meal at least once a day during the summer."
