Schools celebrate National Read Across America Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- On Dr. Seuss's birthday, Read Across America Day celebrated its twentieth year.

Rockfield Elementary School got into the spirit, inviting more than 40 guests from the community -- like WKU athletes, local celebrities and middle school principals -- to read to children.

Kids dressed up as their favorite storybook characters, and enjoyed shaved ice from Kona Ice.

"It teaches kids that reading's important. Kids get kind of in the same drag of the teacher reading to them," said Sarah Wallace, assistant family resource coordinator. "So this is a good way for people to come in and emphasize that reading is important, and also bring in somebody new that they're not used to having in class."

The elementary school will continue its encouragement of reading next week, with dress-up and spirit days, family reading night and the school book fair.
