We all know about the anti-viral medication, tami-flu, but what about home remedies? With flu season in it's prime it may be nice to know what some say are alternative methods to treating sickness.
Some of the methods are herbal remedies that have been around for centuries, and others you may find rather odd. At the Mediterranean Food Store off of Russellville Road, you can find European food and people.
And it's where Sifet Hasic hangs out, and talks about a rather unusual flu remedy he swears everyone back home in Bosnia uses--sour, wild apples. The more interesting part is how they use the apples on their feet. "We use the juice to soak our socks or a towel in case of high temperature and we wrap it around our feet or put the socks on and that takes care of your temperature."
You don't have to go all the way to Bosnia to get this wild sour apple mixture for your feet, you can get it on the shelf at the Mediterranean food store. It's called sirce juice, and you can even drink it, as long as you sweeten it up first. "You can also drink it, you know, put a little lemonade or sugar in it, make it taste a little better," said Hasic.
Katy Jennings, the manager at The Nutrition Center off of 31-W says echinacea is a traditional remedy in the U.S. dating back to Native Americans. "The echinacea that grows here in the United States is supposed to be the most powerful in the world so all the other countries like to get our echinacea," said Jennings.
Her personal favorite is mixing blueberry tea with elderberry tea for a soothing hot drink. "The blueberries provide the benefit of antioxidants and the elderberries have the anti-viral properties."
From immune boosters to flu fighters, she says there are plenty of natural herbal remedies you can use, and some of you shared your home remedies with us on facebook--taking vitamins, eating healthy, home-made soup, hot tea, and even drinking bourbon!
Hasic says be prepared to smell--but another Bosnian cure--garlic.
"You can eat a lot of garlic, and that actually helps the most, but i choose this apple juice because it doesn't have a strong smell."
If you are worried about getting the flu, health officials say the best home remedy is rest and to get vaccinated.
