The Defense Department says 23-year-old Sgt. Charles Patterson Whitler was executed by North Korean soldiers on Nov. 2, 1950, on a farm in North Korea.

The Messenger-Inquirer reports two of his sisters will travel to Cloverport in Breckinridge County to attend his funeral Friday.

Chris Burns of Burns Funeral Home says many residents in the community will stand by the road holding American flags when Whitler's remains are taken to the cemetery in his hometown.
