The local area lakes will no doubt be flooded this weekend with people enjoying the three day vacation.

Park rangers, however, will be busy keeping the waters safe and they have suggestions for boaters.

"Some of the things we check for are lifejackets for everyone on board. Including making sure they are the right size for everyone, you want to make sure you have your fire extinguisher on board, make sure you have a throwable device and some sort of noise making device," Park Ranger Danielle Treadway said.

When you think of lifejackets you probably typically think about big, orange and clunky, but that is not the case.

Some are inflatable and will not expand until it is submerged in water or until you pull the plug and expand it yourself.

The rangers will check boats before they get on the water and some already out there.

Having the proper tools isn't the only safety tip that's being given out.

"A lot of times drowning is a silent killer. It's not like what you see in the movies with people waving their arms and screaming. Drowning victims are more concentrated on trying to get their head above the water and trying to breathe, so you normally don't hear people because they do not have the opportunity to scream for help," Treadway said

And lastly, If you are thinking about bringing along an adult beverage, don't.

Drinking and boating don't go together.

"Alcohol and boating is dangerous just like driving and alcohol is dangerous being out on the lake and in the sun actually intensifies the alcohol effects," she said.
