Former Bristow Elementary Building Torn Down
For more than 60 years, students walked the halls of Bristow. Now, in 2010, the building is no more.

The building was built by the bare hands of many.

"(It was) hand-laid with wheel barrels," said Warren County Public Schools Coordinator Joanie Hendricks. "So it was really time that the students here got something with a new face and freshing, and to bring the new face of education to them."

The new school boasts energy efficiency. With solar panels and heat-sensing thermal technology, the district hopes to save thousands, if not millions of dollars with its new digs.

"This school can operate without any operational costs because the solar panels will put out more energy than what this will consume from the energy company," said Hendricks.

The old school has likely seen millions of people walk through before it was torn down. One person who just hapened to walk through is Travis Smith. He was attending a sporting event one night, where he says he met the girl of his dreams.

"It holds special memories of her because it was here where I first met her at a ball game," Smith said.

Smith says his wife graduated from Bristow back when it was a high school. He says it's kind of ironic. He works for Scotty's Contracting, and the place where he first laid eyes on his wife, is the place he's currently working to tear down.

"You now, (I) would like if it had been sitting in the right spot to have turned it into something that was usable," he said. "I did hate to tear it down."

Smith says when what's left of the building is hauled away, the district will build a new parking lot. But he says no matter what replaces the school, the memories will still remain.

"When you pass here you'll still imagine the old gymnasium and the old school the way it was," said Smith.

The rubble from the old school will be hauled away Tuesday.
