A Russellville physician is charged with cheating the government out of millions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid payments.
After a lengthy investigation, Federal and State agents say Dr. Michael Stevens, his wife Jody, and his father-in-law, Edward Bailey, all conspired to file false medical claims while working at Logan County's Pain Management Center. Officials say from a period of 1997 until July of last year, Dr. Stevens lied about the treatments of more than 100 patients.
Prosecutors say patients coming to the clinic were either charged for services not performed, or their hours of treatment were greatly exaggerated.
Officials tell WBKO News, Dr. Stevens and his wife posted a $25,000 unsecured cash bond Wednesday. Bailey, who's currently out of state, has agreed to turn himself in to agents on Thursday.
The three are charged with defrauding Medicaid, Medicare, and other healthcare programs of $3.5 million.
